“The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses – behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights.”-Muhammad Ali Katy Zang, has long been recognized as one of the elite runners in the state of Ohio, and beyond. Her list of accomplishments goes on for a long time. On Friday afternoon, at the Division One Indoor Track State Championships, she would add to the list in spectacular fashion. In the 3200 meter run on the track at Spire Academy, Katy would take less than 10 minutes to etch her name into the history books. Taking the lead from the start and never looking back, Katy continued to pull away from the field filled with elite athletes from Ohio. In 9:42.84, Katy completed the 3200 meters to secure the state championship. Her first state championship victory in her career. To make things sweeter, Katy set the indoor 3200 meter run state record, becoming the first Ohio high school girl to break the 10:00 mark in the race. A remarkable accomplishment in a state with a strong history in girls running. To Katy’s credit, her victory and record setting performance were accomplished with a strong commitment to excellence, a desire to succeed, and a willingness to work when the lights were off and no one was watching. It is often said this is what it takes to be a champion and Katy is proof that it can happen.
