The Teays Valley Vikings came up just a few points short today versus Newark in the OHSAA Sectional Tournament. From the opening tip to the final horn the Vikings effort was great. The first period saw the Vikings play some great ball as we had 6 baskets off of 5 assists. We played very unselfish today and the kids were locked in to what we needed to do. Senior Adam Benschoter had 6 points off of 2 – 3 pointers and Cam Primmer added 5 points in the quarter. The second period saw Newark take a lead early in the period but the Vikings kept making plays to keep close going into half. Benschoter was the difference in the second period scoring 7 points. The third period saw the Vikings score the first 4 points to cut the lead to 2 before Newark pushed it back to 8 later in the period. The Vikings continued to battle cutting the Newark lead to 5 with 1:50 to go in the period. We had some opportunities to cut the lead to 1 or 2 but just could not get the ball in the basket. Balanced scoring by the Vikings allowed us to keep it within reach heading to the fourth. The 4th period started a little tough as we had 3 turnovers to start the period sparking a Newark 11 – 0 run. We had some great looks just were not able to convert. Our kids intensity and effort were really good all day. The Vikings would cut the Wildcat lead to 7 but could get no closer as the 2019 – 20 season came to an end. “I am extremely proud of our senior players, Adam Benschoter, Trey Purdon, Cody Kennedy, Cole Sauerbrun, Clayton Knox and Riely Weiss. These guys did a great job all season long, keeping us together and playing hard. I feel very fortunate to have these guys as my first senior class and they will be missed” Coach Barnett
